What a treat to spend two nights at such a legendary establishment…
The first time I visited Raffles Hotel was during a trip to Singapore in the 1980s when my friend Barbara and I dropped in to do the Singapore Sling thing.
I returned to Singapore in 1990 but the hotel was closed for renovations. These days I visit the city a lot and I’ve been back to Raffles several times but have never stayed there until now.
We were also given the grand tour but I was puzzled because I couldn’t locate the upper floor veranda/lounge-bar where I remember drinking that very first Singapore Sling.
Happily, I later met the hotel’s historian who explained that the cocktail would have been served on the veranda above the original ballroom, which was knocked down at the time of the major renovations during 1989 – 1991.
