On my travels in Lombok this week, I witnessed one of the many illegal gold mining operations where mercury is used to extract gold from the rock and is then dumped, along with other mining waste including cyanide, into rivers and then flushed into the sea. The workers burn mercury over open Bunsen burners; much of the land is privately owned and protected forest; hundreds are believed to have died in collapsing mines and rock slides; and child labour is common, many of the shaft openings are so narrow that only a child could get in.
