Bologna

We spent 24 hours in the beautiful, old, old city of Bologna – home of Bolognaise sauce and full of colonnaded walkways. So how did we spend we evening?

We went to the movies…

It just so happened that there was film festival taking place while we were there. While we had been exploring the city during the day, we had spotted the huge open-air screen set up in the main square, Piazza Maggiore. So in the evening we went back to investigate.

We noted the movie was scheduled to start at 11pm, so after enjoying a pizza for dinner we returned to take our seats, we had no idea what movie was showing or what language it would be in.

Alas, when we got back to the square at 10.40pm, all the seats (hundreds and hundreds of them) were taken but we spotted a table and a couple of chairs at a restaurant, which was situated to one side with a perfect view of the screen. So we sat down and ordered a bottle of Borolo and waited for the movie to begin. To our delight it was Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘North by Northwest’ with Cary Grant. We were half expecting it to be dubbed in Italian, but nah this was a film festival! Happily for us it was in English with Italian subtitles. What a great evening, we had the best seats in the house, complete with a table, a bowl of olives, some crisps and a bottle of our favourite Italian wine. What a lovely memory we now have of a summer evening in Bologna!
