In 1579, Francis Drake (who, two years later became SIR Francis Drake) dropped anchor off the clove-perfumed island of Ternate, which rests in the Moluccas, now part of Indonesia. Drake was born in my home town of Tavistock,

so, in 2011, when I went to Ternate (a place that is not visited by very many tourists) on an exciting spice-trail voyage of adventure and discovery,
I couldn’t help wondering if I was the first person from Tavistock since Sir Francis himself to have set foot on these far away shores?

It was so cool to find this spot, from where we captured the view of Tidore from Ternate as seen on the IDR 1000 banknote
