During our trip to Sumatra, we spent one night in Banda Aceh, the city where around 150,000 people were killed in the Tsunami of 26 December 2004.
Everyone we spoke to had a story to tell, and we saw some chilling reminders of the tremendous force of the waters, some of which have been preserved as poignant memorials, including this fishing boat, which had been pushed several kilometres inland before lodging itself on the roof of a house. The boat saved the lives of 59 people who clambered aboard, including the owner of the house.
