This was a funny scene in Lombok last Tuesday morning. As we headed out of Senggigi, we passed a load of motorcycles and vehicles parked up at the side of the main road, their disconcerted-looking drivers sitting around as if they were waiting for something, while others were making rapid turnarounds. A royal cremation took place today in Ubud. Tjokorda Istri Sri Tjandrawati was the wife of Tjokorda Gde Sukawati, ‘Penglingsir’, leader of the palace. It was a truly spectacular adrenaline-charged event, which I felt privileged to witness and lucky to get close to.

Our 2500-mile American roadtrip took us from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe and Reno and on through western Nevada back into California and then through central Oregon to the far northeast corner of the state. From there we drove west to Portland and back down the Oregon-California coast to San Francisco.
